Exceptional performance in a modular design

With state-of-the-art PC components, the Automation PC 910 ensures many years of availability. The PC infrastructure has been streamlined for maximum computing performance and optimal data throughput. The APC910 takes advantage of modular accessory components such as interface modules and mass storage devices (hard disk, SSD, CFast card) that considerably simplify stock management. It is not necessary to make continuous adjustments to the PC hardware over time, which adds up to its own cost advantages.

The whole range of processors available for the Automation PC 910 provide maximum computing power for the most complex tasks. They are based on the 6th generation of Core i-series processors – the benchmark for top-performing PC architectures. The size of the chip has been reduced to an impressive 14 nanometers. A new microarchitecture with the graphics unit integrated directly in the CPU provides a considerable leap in performance over previous generations of Core i processors. Graphics performance has also been improved with the addition of support for DirectX 12.

The rest of the PC infrastructure has also been streamlined for maximum computing performance and optimal data throughput. For example, the Automation PC 910 features a serial ATA-based CFast card instead of the previously used CompactFlash. CFast cards combine the form factor of a CompactFlash card with the faster SATA interface. The CFast cards retain all the advantages of CompactFlash – such as its extreme robustness.

Multi-core

Since the introduction of the Core Duo processors, the multi-core approach has been the foundation for continued development of CPU technology. Development of single-core processors had reached a point where increased performance could only be achieved with a substantial increase in power consumption. Multi-core processors resolved the conflicting goals of higher performance and improved energy efficiency. The current generation of Core i series equipped in Automation PC 910 systems includes a rich selection of high-performance dual-core and quad-core processors. This includes several low-power versions that allow the Automation PC 910 to be operated without fans, even with Core i3 / Celeron variants.

Future proof

The fully modular construction of the Automation PC 910 allows the system platform to be adapted to various applications. With data storage options ranging from SSD to CFast, slots for both PCI and PCI Express and an integrated UPS, there are virtually no limits to what you can do.

Fanless operation that meets the highest demands

Many variants of the Automation PC 910 provide the option of operation without the use of fans. When this feature is combined with CFast cards and SSDs, the PC system is completely free of rotating parts – a huge advantage when it comes to maintenance-free operation. The Automation PC 910 cooling system has been designed to transfer heat out of the housing with optimal efficiency. To maximize convection for fanless operation, the Automation PC 910 heat sink design was optimized through an extensive evaluation process using simulated models.

As processors shrink in size, heat is generated on a smaller and smaller surface area. To deal with this, heat pipes are the best way to provide maximum heat dissipation.

Optimized air circulation

The new honeycomb openings on the housing panels provide the perfect combination of air circulation and structural rigidity.

Selected processors are able to operate without fans. Yet even without fans, the Automation PC 910 is able to achieve performance results that previous PC generations required fans to achieve. In the high-end range, quad-core processors can be used with fan cooling to achieve performance values that not too long ago would have been inconceivable for such a compact form factor. Air is precisely circulated through the integrated cooling fins.

Powerful computing for bridges and offshore systems

B&R's Automation PC 910 has been awarded DNV GL certification for maritime applications. The industrial PC has been certified in accordance with GL 2010, IACS UR E10. Additionally, DNV GL confirms its compliance with IEC 60945, including the specified Compass Safe Distance. The Automation PC 910 is now available for use in many maritime and offshore applications.

The rugged construction of B&R's industrial PCs has clear advantages when installed on vessels and in harsh maritime environments. The Automation PC has no internal cable connections and does not require shock absorbers or any other auxiliary installation equipment.

Typical applications for the Automation PC 910 include highly integrated bridge systems, electronic chart display and information systems, vessel information systems and voyage data recorders. It is also used in distributed vessel control systems, offshore monitoring and control applications and dynamic positioning systems, as well as to provide condition monitoring for power transmission and power distribution systems or serve as the master or SCADA station in integrated automation systems.
