More advanced, more compact, easier to use

May 2025 saw the introduction of Codian SR, as the Codian family’s first kinematic variant. In 2026, the Codian AR – B&R’s first kinematic 6-axis robot will be launched.

First introduced in 2011, B&R’s Codian range has continued to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the field of modern robotics. Today, it is joined by a kinematic 6-axis variant, which sets standards for performance, accuracy, and usability, and a redesigned 5-axis delta picker.

The field of robotics has grown more competitive, with a wide range of options and technologies available for machine builders and end users, depending on the application’s specific needs. Delta mechanics for instance are optimized for high-speed handling of lightweight items. SCARA robots are ideal for 2D-plane movements with vertical positioning. 6-axis mechanics are suited to applications requiring highly complex 3D paths, multi-angle manipulation, and flexibility to maneuver repeatedly in and out of the workspace. The Codian portfolio offers solutions to suit an even wider range of robotic applications.

Codian AR – 6-axis flexibility in an integrated plug-and-play package

Codian AR is B&R’s 6-axis kinematic robot. Designed for complex handling and orientation-sensitive tasks, the product offers an integrated robotic solution inside machines or machine lines. This reduces the complexity of the machine, while increasing its performance. For machine builders, this helps to reduce time-to-market and reduces overall development costs.

What sets the Codian AR apart is the seamless integration of the robot into the machine application. Plug and play set up means minimal configuration and easy programming straight off the shelf, while B&R’s Machine-Centric Robotics architecture consolidates robotics and machine control to significantly reduce development time and effort.

The robot boasts a minimized footprint and can be wall, ceiling or floor-mounted, making it suited for installation in space-constrained environments. Its six degrees of freedom allow the flexibility to carry out highly complex tasks in very tight spaces. The robot is extremely versatile, and is suited to handling operations, sorting and assembling tasks across a range of industries including CPG, plastics, pharmaceuticals, metals, and electronics manufacturing.

Codian SR – high-speed movement with four degrees of freedom

2025 saw the introduction of SCARA kinematics to the Codian portfolio with Codian SR. This offers high-speed articulated movement with four degrees of freedom – perfect for tasks like pick-and-place, loading and unloading, assembly and dispensing that demand both speed and repeatability on a compact footprint.

The Codian SR complements the existing delta offering and extends the range of the Codian portfolio to cover more applications, particularly those requiring high-speed handling with a lateral offset or with overhead mounting restrictions.

Machine-Centric Robotics – simplifying robotics engineering

One of the highlights of B&R’s Codian range is Machine-Centric Robotics (MCR), which merges robotics and machine control into one unified architecture from the same supplier. Machine builders therefore need only one controller and one engineering platform for development, diagnostics and maintenance. Using the same source for both robots and machine control systems helps to streamline processes, drive sustainability, and ensure efficiency, while reducing barriers to entry for adoption of robotic technologies.

With the Codian AR and SR families, B&R expands the robotics portfolio to deliver unmatched flexibility, precision, and performance, empowering machine builders with compact, integrated solutions for even the most complex automation tasks.
