ACOPOS M4 - Your drive to lead the future

With ACOPOS M4 B&R sets the foundation for the next generation of motion control, enabling automation without limitation. As the first OPC UA FX-ready motion system, ACOPOS M4 introduces a new level of openness and performance, paving the way for truly plug-and-produce automation solutions.

Compact, scalable, sustainable, fast and secure, ACOPOS M4 unleashes new possibilities for the future of automation. The device is the newest and most advanced addition to the ACOPOS servo drive family, combining scalability with compactness, while doubling the power density compared to previous generations. With a single inverter module up to four synchronous, asynchronous, linear or torque motors can be controlled simultaneously.

Compared to previous generations, ACOPOS M4 doubles the power density, facilitating the design of smaller, more energy efficient machines and cabinets, while increasing the number of motors controlled from a single device. Each module controls up to four axes across a power range of 1–200 kW, while the highly scalable design allows almost unlimited module combinations.

Achieve more in less space and using less energy

A 60% reduction in cabinet footprint (for 4-axis modules), without compromising on functionality, allows machine builders and system integrators to achieve more with less. Configuration length is reduced by 30%, which is achieved by integrating an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filter into the power supply module, while removing the need for an external braking resistor or regeneration choke.

This, combined with the device’s high efficiency, also allows cabinet cooling requirements to be reduced to further optimize cabinet space. Both water-cooled and air-cooled variants are available within the ACOPOS M4 range, from 1.4 kW (1.9 A) to 200 kW (315 A).

ACOPOS M4 is one of the first servo drives in the world to be developed natively around on OPC UA FX, and designed to unlock the full potential of this next-generation fieldbus for future machine automation. OPC UA FX is an extension of OPC UA, which is designed specifically to be cross-platform and open-source, allowing integration of field level devices all the way up to cloud applications. It enables more reliable control networks, and allows secure data collection from multiple systems at the same time. It also includes certificate-based encryption, which can provide more robust security compared to integrating several different protocols at once. Crucially, OPC UA is the first truly open protocol to have widespread industry support. As a member of the OPC UA working group, B&R is among the first vendors to have successfully implemented this protocol into its products.

The implementation of OPC UA FX opens up new possibilities for predictive maintenance and AI functionalities. The device can detect and flag up issues to human operators long before they develop into faults. The device can sense, adapt, monitor and predict machine behavior, and respond quickly to external changes. Built-in diagnostic and maintenance tools monitor the condition and performance of the ACOPOS M4 device, while automatic firmware updates provide performance and security improvements throughout its lifetime.

Superior performance through multi-level topology

Building on the proven efficiency of previous ACOPOS generations, the M4 power supply module pushes performance even further, achieving 99% efficiency while cutting power losses by 40%. This has been achieved through the use of a multi-level topology, which provides superior performance to traditional IGBTs. Multi-level technology provides a number of benefits, including reducing voltage stress on the power switches, reducing commutation losses, and achieving a higher quality output voltage waveform with lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). B&R’s multi-level implementation is compatible with all main grid electrical supplies around the world, with no need for isolating transformers.

ACOPOS M4 achieves lower cycle times compared to its predecessors, with a 25 μs internal cycle time for position, velocity and current regulation loop, as well on CAM profile generation, local IO activation and Smart Process Technology (SPT) program execution. A standby mode allows the device to power down without switching off, reducing energy draw while ensuring a quick start-up on resumption of duties – ideal for between shift changes on a production line.

ACOPOS M4 sets a new benchmark for motion control, combining compact design, high energy efficiency,
intelligence and OPC UA FX connectivity to deliver secure, scalable automation without limits.
