With the ACOPOS P3, B&R is setting new standards for motion control. The ACOPOS P3 servo drive is now also available with feed-through heat sink or cold plate cooling. This reduces the use of fans and air conditioners in the control cabinet or, ideally, eliminates them altogether. Operation and maintenance costs are reduced.

System designers can now choose between the following cooling variants for the ACOPOS P3:
With conventional wall mounting, heat dissipates via the air inside the control cabinet. This solution is optimal for a small number of axes with low power.
With a large number of axes in all power ranges, feed-through mounting is more suitable. An IP65-rated feed-through heat sink dissipates heat directly to the ambient air outside the control cabinet, so there is no need for costly cooling in the cabinet itself.
This method utilizes a water-cooled cold plate. Virtually all heat loss from the devices is transferred to the coolant. This type of cooling is suitable for a large number of axes in all power ranges. It requires the machine to have its own cooling circuit.
The ACOPOS P3 is available as a 1-, 2- or 3-axis system. It covers a power range from 0.6 to 18 kW or 1.6 to 44 amperes. The housing for the 3-axis system is as compact as a conventional 1-axis drive. Space consumption in the control cabinet is reduced by 69%. In addition, an integrated digital multi-encoder interface is available to the user for each axis.
With a short cycle time of 50 µs for current, speed and position control, the ACOPOS P3 opens up new opportunities for advanced motion control. For highly dynamic and precise processes like those in the printing and packaging industries, extremely fast movements must be controlled with absolute precision. With the short cycle times of the ACOPOS P3 and the bandwidth and precision of the POWERLINK real-time Ethernet network, this is no problem.
The trend towards higher productivity with a smaller footprint and reduced energy consumption is forcing machine manufacturers to adopt lightweight designs. The moving masses or mass moments of inertia are being reduced. This decreases stiffness while increasing elasticity. Virtual sensing makes it possible to control these elastic systems while retaining a high level of quality without having to use additional position sensors at the process intervention point.
In addition, virtual position encoders can be used in the motor. The drive system does not require a motor position encoder, cables or an evaluation unit in the servo drive. This reduces the number of components and increases the availability of the drive unit.
