Automation PC APC680
High processing power, modular construction, numerous types of insert cards, and Windows XP with real-time expansion combine to make the APC680 the central element when it comes to open PC-based automation.
APC680
Slot CPU System for Maximum Flexibility
Based on a PICMG-compliant slot CPU, the APC680 represents the classic switching cabinet industrial PC. Features such as high processing power and high performance of the entire infrastructure – from the USDA hard disk to the front side bus with 133 MHz – combine to make the APC680 perfect for every automation task.
Individual Configuration
The APC680 has a modular structure, allowing the system to be optimized to meet individual demands. The cornerstone of this PC is the slot CPU based on the Intel 815E chipset. This means that processors from Celeron 566 up to Pentium III with 1.26 GHz can be used. The design is based on the PICMG standard, which defines the basic interface between the slot CPU and the PC infrastructure. The slot CPU is a simple wide module that can be operated in one of the two PICMG slots located on the passive backplane.

Slot CPU interfaces:

  • 2 x Ethernet 10/100 MBit/s
  • USB
  • PS/2 keyboard
  • PS/2 mouse

In addition, the following interfaces are available for the slot CPU using optional add-on boards:

  • DVI-I for .at displays and RS232
  • AC97 sound and parallel interface
Data Storage Designed for a High Level of Operational Security
Two hard disks, each with a high-speed UDMA 100 connection, can be operated in the APC680 housing. This guarantees faster data throughput, even when recording extremely large amounts of data. CompactFlash modules can also be used instead of hard disks. These storage media have the advantage of operating completely free of rotating parts, making them particularly suited for use in harsh industrial environments. In addition, the APC680 has room for various drive combinations – from standard FDD/CD-ROM drives to FDD/DVD-ROM drives with an integrated CD burner.
Modular Interfaces
Another example of the APC680’s high degree of .exibility lies in its use of serial interfaces. In addition to the RS232 interface on the graphics adapter, which primarily serves as the connection to the display unit (e.g. touch screen), three other serial interfaces are also available. These have been modularly designed so that the user can de.ne both their number as well as the physical interface itself (RS232, RS422/485).
Temperature Management
Special emphasis was placed on ventilation when the Automation PC 680 was being designed. This system is equipped with two high-performance 100 mm housing fans. The fans are temperature-controlled and their speed is monitored. The flow of air is regulated by filter pads in the intake area. These .lter pads can be easily replaced from the outside without having to open up the device.
